WPI RECEIVES IOC / IAKS GOLD MEDAL DESIGN AWARD
FOR RIO 2016 OLYMPIC VENUE IN DEODORO

Whitewater Parks International (WPI) has been awarded a prestigious Gold Medal design award by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and the International Association of Sports and Leisure Facilities (IAKS) for it's innovations in developing the Deodoro Whitewater Stadium, constructed for the Rio 2016 Olympic Canoe Slalom events.

WPI shares this honor with our design partners at Vigliecca & Associados, whose masterplan for the entire Deodoro venue cluster included 11 Olympic / Paralympic facilities, some of which are now providing vibrant post-Games legacy opportunities for local residents.

The Gold Medal was presented to WPI by former Olympic Games Executive Director, Gilbert Felli at a gala dinner held in Cologne, Germany on November 7, 2017 as part of the IAKS International Congress.

In selecting the Deodoro facility as one of only four Gold Medals awarded in 2017, the Jury cited the project as "one of the best examples of an engineered whitewater venue, which is usually a very specific facility with a restricted range of use. Here, the artificial lake at the bottom of the run serves now as a recreational swimming destination for one of the largest youth populations in Rio, even as it continues to host whitewater competitions."

"Compared with previous whitewater venues, the Deodoro design also reduces the vertical distance between the discharge level and the artificial lake at the bottom, thereby reducing the pumping height and energy required to operate it. The Jury sees in the Deodoro design a socially responsible approach to catering for a meaningful legacy, and the ultimate benefit of a specialized facility to the general well-being of the neighboring community."
